10 Years Ago Louise Truex's knitted tablecloth received the Best of Show ribbon in the Home and Family Arts Building. Truex, the needle work department's superintendent, used crochet thread and No. 1 knitting needles to complete the 58-inch square tablecloth. She found the pattern in a book she bought in an antique shop.
The grand champion quilt prize went to the dimensional applique quilt assembled by Lynda Saner. Saner, who has always sewn clothes, took up quilting about three years ago.
25 Years Ago Dr. David Perkins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Perkins, Warsaw, has accepted a research position at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston. Perkins, a 1961 graduate of Warsaw High school, is doing medical research on lupus. His wife, Dr. Patricia Finn, is doing lung-related research at Harvard University Medical School. Both doctors are graduates of Albert Einstein School of Medicine in New York and they have been working on research projects at Boston University and Massachusetts General Hospitals.
50 Years Ago Governor Matthew E. Welsh told 8,000 persons attending the Youth For Christ International Conference at Winona Lake last night that the state or federal government should not build complicated or expensive machinery to combat problems that can best be solved on the local level. His appearance was a surprise and had been previously cancelled when he was stranded at the Governor's Conference in Hawaii by the shipping strike. Governor Welsh had previously declared Tuesday as "Help Combat Juvenile Delinquency" in Indiana.
75 Years Ago The intense heat of the past few days has caused several explosions on state highways in Kosciusko County, according to officials of the state highway department. One explosion occurred on Lincoln Highway 30, east of Warsaw; another occurred on Ind. 13 south of Sidney and on Ind. 15. Explosions occurred both north and south of Warsaw. In the entire state, a total of 13 explosions of pavement have occurred on Indiana highways due to the 100-degree heat.
