10 Years Ago Winners have been named in the annual Chapman Lakes Conservation Association July 4 flotilla. The flotilla attracted 23 entrants and was held on Chapman Lakes. The theme was “Anything Goes” with an emphasis on honoring those who died in the attacks on Sept. 11, along with the policemen and firefighters everywhere who risk their lives every day. Some of the winners were: President’s award - Gary & Emily Cown, USS Battleship; Chairman’s Award - The Enders Family, Tribute to 911 Heroes; Secretary’s Award - Gary Kiser, Firefighter Heroes. 25 Years Ago Kathie Yoder, 26, Syracuse, was named Syracuse Sesquicentennial Queen recently at the Sesquicentennial Queen Pageant at Wawasee High School. The four finalists for the title were Ann Vitaniemi, Donna Carpenter, Debra Wagoner, the first runnerup, and Paula Smith. Yoder was also named Miss Congeniality, an award determined by the contestants. 50 Years Ago Army Lt. Col. Jack I. Hamlin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul J. Hamlin, of Etna Green, was awarded the Army Commendation Medal by Major General Webster G. Anderson, quartermaster general. Col. Hamlin was awarded the medal on merit of his service on the Hoelscher committee and for his assignment with the Quartermaster General in Washington. Col. Hamlin, who entered the army in 1943, is a graduate of Etna Green High School. He attended Indiana University, Bloomington. His wife, Dora, and daughter reside in Springfield, Va. 75 Years Ago Miss Mary Elizabeth Cromer, of Winona Lake, recently was graduated with the degree of Master of Religious Education from the Biblical Seminary in New York City. In the fall Miss Cromer will be enrolled for a nurses’ training course at the Booth Memorial Hospital, New York.
