Danita "Dee" Mayhew netted second in the state and received Rookie of the Year Award at the annual UGLY Bartender Contest in Indianapolis. UGLY (Unbelievably, Generous, Lovable, You) is a national contest that raises money to fight multiple sclerosis. Mayhew, who works for American Legion Post 253 in North Webster, collected $14,649.50 - only $84 short of first place.
The duo of Skip Farr and Scott Sebo won the Tony Lema Memorial match play tournament at Rozella Ford with a 6 and 4 victory over Joe Ostrowski and Elim Smith.
Nine-year-old Dennis Young received an excellent rating for his baking demonstration in the Marshall County contest. A first-year 4-H member, Dennis is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Young, of Bourbon.
A turtle 53 years old, according to the date, 1879, carved on its back, was found by C.E. Valentine at the corner of Park Avenue and Market Street. Under the date is carved the name, T.E. Dison or T.E. Dixon. The turtle is said to be of the tortoise variety, the kind which inhabits woods instead of lakes. The turtle is only about 8 inches long in length despite its longevity.
