10 Years Ago In only its third year of existence, Warsaw girls rugby team finished the season with a 9-0 record and won the state championship with a 42-5 win over North Central (Indianapolis) Monday at Moose Rugby Grounds in Elkhart. The Marandet sisters, Maude and Angele, led the Tigers. Kristi Haddad, a 2004 Warsaw Community High School graduate, was named to the National Christian College Athletic Association All-American Women’s Tennis Team. She played No. 2 doubles for Indiana Wesleyan with Sarah Bauss from Kalamazoo, Mich., and won all five matches at the NCCAA National Tournament. Haddad also compiled an 11-1 singles record. 25 Years Ago Warsaw Middle School students of Keith Cook excelled at Notre Dame Math League: Sarah Kirkpatrick, Jackie Whitesell, Josh Zaugg, Cathy Lundin, Beth Hoy, Amanda Farber, Kiley Ryba, Aaron Goslee, Calvin Clutter, Jeff Handel, Aaron Scantlen, Joe Slaughter, James Pinnick, Robby Criswell, Nate Manahan, Dawn Hetzel, Amanda Donathan, Elisabeth Hoyt. Kosciusko Community YMCA honored Jerry Clevenger, past president of the board of directors, as their volunteer of the year. The award was presented by Don Enterline, executive director, and Vivian Kayler, volunteer coordinator. 1990 Senior Queen Charlotte Hubartt, North Webster, was crowned by last year’s queen, Dorthea Kerlin. Runner-up was Phyllis Sundheimer of Warsaw. 50 Years Ago Warsaw Junior High courtesy king and queen: seventh grade – Dave Miller and Cindy Smith; runner-up, Stanley Becher and Karen Ditmer. Eighth grade – Jim Bryan and Anna Clark; runner-up, Gary Goshert and Martha Kelty. Manchester Community High School top students: Kathy Longenecker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Longenecker, valedictorian; Karen King, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rufus King, salutatorian. Andy Brown and Jerry Patterson will act as junior counselors when the Baker Boys Club attends camp at Bradford Woods in southern Indiana June 17 through 27. Chauncey Bennett is opening a new mobile paint store which he will operate from his home in Burket. He will deliver paint and supplies to his customers. 75 Years Ago Earl Shull and Lawrence Haines teamed up to capture the double carom tournament for county boys, held at the Warsaw Boys Club. They defeated John Berlin and Bruce Howard in the finals, 13-10, 13-10. To reach the finals, Shull and Haines ousted Dewey Riggins and Junior Shull, 13-11, 13-11; Berlin and Howard defeated Homer Swinehart and Earl Leedy, 13-9, 13-12. Director Lee Norman “Pete” Thorn reported that 20 boys were entered in the tournament. Mark Hammer, who was graduated from Warsaw High School last year, set a new record in foul shooting at the Boys Club. He converted on 96 out of 100 free throws, missing only two in the first 75 shots. A new Boy Scout Troop (51) is sponsored by the Leesburg Methodist Church.
