    Edgewood Middle School's eighth-grade artist for 1997 is Lauren Diekhoff, daughter of Kenneth and Paul Diekhoff. Lauren's work will become part of Edgewood's ongoing student artist collection. Her art teacher is Sherri Anglin.

June 8 1982

    Mark Demske, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Demske, Pierceton, will attend the 33rd annual Farm Forestry Camp held at the Future Farmers of America Camp near Trafalgar in Johnson County during the week of June 7-11 as the Kosciusko County representative.

Demske was selected because of his interest in forestry and conservation and past record in 4-H conservation activities.

June 8 1957

    Gene Likens, son of Mr. and Mrs. Colonel Likens, Pierceton, graduated "with high distinction" from Manchester College. This honor represents the top 2 percent of the senior class, academically. A 1953 alumnus of Sidney High School, Gene received a bachelor's degree in biological sciences.


75 Years Ago

June 8 1932

    Friends of Bob Minear, deputy county recorder, are considering presenting him with a butterfly net. The reason: This morning Minear was annoyed by a little, or rather young, English sparrow, which flitted around the recorder's office, the bird having come in through an open window.

Armed with a metal waste paper basket Minear caught the sparrow. The bird was then given its freedom by being put out of the window.
