 Tabby Ramsey, fifth-grade student in Patricia Smith’s class at Akron Elementary School, is the Fulton County winner of the 2002 David Deuter Memorial Fifth-Grade Essay Contest, sponsored by the Indiana Troopers Association Inc. In an essay of approximately 100 words, Ramsey wrote on the topic, “Why I choose to Live a Drug-Free Life.” As the Fulton County winner, she will receive a $500 U.S. Savings Bond from the Indiana Troopers Association. Her parents are John Jr. and Penny Ramsey, of Akron.

 Named valedictorian of this year’s Lakeland Christian Academy’s graduating class was Phil Doron, son of Rev. and Mrs. Dale Doron of Warsaw. He plans to attend Biola University in La Mirada, Calif., majoring in music. The salutatorian for the Lakeland’s class of 1987 was Jennifer Rose, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marlin Rose of Warsaw. She plans to attend Grace College and major in business administration and accounting.

 Miss Eileen Kay Vandermark, daughter of the Condict Vandermarks, Leesburg, has been awarded a special scholarship to Indiana University. It will pay approximately one-half her freshman fees. Eileen will major in music. She was graduated from Leesburg High School last month.

 Heroic and quick-thinking action by Jack Walker, 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Walker, prevented possible fatal burns to his friend, Robert Kessler, 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vern Kessler. Jack, with his friend’s clothing ablaze as the result of a gasoline explosion, threw himself across Robert after pulling him to the ground, and so smothered the flames with his own body and at the expense of painful burns.
