10 Years Ago Warsaw Community High School senior Rachel Braddock, daughter of Paul and Cynthia Braddock, has signed to continue her education and basketball career at Grace College under Coach Scott Blum. Rachel will study special education. Wawasee High School’s Kendra Ganz, daughter of Dale and Benji Ganz, will continue her tennis career at Huntington College under Coach Gary Turner next fall. She plans to study advertising. Wawasee students Jordan Cunningham, Shane and Joel Hogle make up the local band “Fifth Project.” Joel and Shane started the group in November and will be recording their second CD in June. Shane says he writes most of their songs, which are about everyday life. 25 Years Ago God’s Highway to Heaven Church held its “Make A Difference” Teen Banquet May 25 in the Women’s Building at the fairgrounds. Honored as the Teenagers of the Year were Tommy Stills, 15, a sophomore at Whitko High School, and Rachel Brown, 13, New Life Christian Academy. Rachel has had perfect attendance in Sunday School for 11 years. Jefferson Elementary fourth-grade student Jon Lawlor, son of David and Sally Lawlor, Winona Lake, designed a poster with the theme of recycling, and it was chosen to be displayed at the Children’s Museum of Art in Indianapolis during the month of June. Warsaw Street Department honored Mark Paseka. He joined the department Jan. 1, 1969, and retired May 24, being responsible for special pickups and road patching. Tiger Aquatic Club, which practices at Warsaw Community Pool, was founded by high school coach and instructor Frank Sapper. 50 Years Ago Bill Pearl, Sears’ manager, donated a large base radio antenna to Civil Defense to be placed on the county jail and used for communications in case of an emergency. Park Superintendent Avery “Pat” Garber and crews are rapidly getting the city parks into top shipshape condition in anticipation of record-breaking crowds expected this summer. Mayor Joe Johnson is asking Warsaw residents to “Clean-up and Paint-up” this week. City workers are tearing down the old merry-go-round at Center Lake, and a new one will be put up for the kiddies. Helping are Donald Shoemaker, Ralph Walgamuth and Val England. Kay Heiman was crowned queen of the Leesburg High School prom by Rolly Robison; Norman Mike Rogers was crowned king by Kristine Heiman. 75 Years Ago Warsaw Mayor John G. Hansman is honorary chairman of the committee for the flag week celebration June 8 to 14. Other members are Loren Chastain, Herbert L. Espich, James M. Leffel, Raymond Neff, O.R. Ferguson, Herbert Lytle, Hayes Glass, the Revs. A.W. Raabe, F.K. Dougherty, A.A. Duke and A.W. Littrell, Eugene White, Clarence Hartman, Harry Lewallen, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Funk, Mrs. Frank Sanders, Lucy Upson, Don Lessig, V.F. Bibler and Reuben Williams.
