10 Years Ago The 2005 “Coast to Coast of Indiana Bike Race” is set for July 16 and 17, starting on the shores of Lake Michigan at Washington Park in Michigan City, ending in Crawfordsville; on Sunday, the racers start from here and end at Sunset Park in Evansville on the edge of the Ohio River, a total of 318 miles. The four-person relay race was started last year by Luke Becknell, Warsaw, in memory of his brother, Ben, who passed away in 1984. DARE Officer Joe Hawn and riders from Hire Park BMX wowed the crowds by doing jumping demonstrations at Lincoln, Sacred Heart, Washington, Jefferson, Harrison and Redeemer Lutheran schools. Volunteers: Danny and Trevor Rumple, Brad Bauters, Nick Newland, Henry Howard, Brian, Nate and Luke Strieby. 25 Years Ago The Strawberry Festival will be on the courthouse square in downtown Warsaw June 9. Homemakers and bakers are invited to submit their best strawberry pie. Last year’s pie-eating contest winner, Terry Klosowski of KABS, will be back to defend his title. Warsaw Business Association will sell strawberry shortcake. There’s a diaper derby, peanut hunt sponsored by the newly-formed chapter of the Jaycees and dog and cat show. The Lake Theatre will sponsor a free movie to all children wearing “Just say no to drugs” buttons. Vacation Bible School will be at Warsaw Wesleyan Church June 11 to 15 with the theme “God’s Gold Rush.” Prospectors, cowboys and cowgirls, Indians, pioneer families, circuit-riding preachers and cavalry will be part of the week. Activities take place in tents and a tepee on the church grounds with refreshments being served from a chuckwagon. 50 Years Ago Bill Loop, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Loop, Warsaw, was presented the highest band honor of Warsaw Community High School – The Andrews Arion Foundation Award – by instructor Bazil O’Reilley. He also received the director’s baton for promoting the interests of the band the year. Brent Sandy, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Rollin Sandy, Winona Lake, was named student conductor. Charles Manwaring, Mentone poultry man, was appointed to the Indiana Livestock Sanitary Board by Gov. Roger Branigin to replace A.I. Martin, Ramsey poultry grower. Manwaring has been serving on the State Egg Board. Milo Clase, Kosciusko County civil defense director, stated that the magazine “Civil Defender” is not connected with operations locally. 75 Years Ago Owners of lots in East Warsaw, in the vicinity of the Argonne Road, have informed police that truckers are making a habit of hauling top dirt from land in that area. Such practice is unlawful, and will be stopped by police, said Chief Raymond Neff. Police Thursday night were advised that the automobile of Fred Mellencamp had been stolen but the car was later found parked on East Center Street in front of the Walter drug store. The exceptional cold weather for the latter part of April and the first of May will have little effect on the crops if it does not continue too long. Kosciusko County farmers say the spring rains have been a great help to pasture land. Oats and corn were reported as plentiful.
