    A sixth-grader from Eisenhower Elementary won the statewide DARE essay contest and will receive an award from the organization in July.

Emily Clemens' essay, titled "Life's Highways and Byways and What DARE Means to Me," was named the DARE essay of the year for Indiana.

June 30 1983

    Carla Clouse, of Syracuse, was the overall women's winner in the 5-kilometer race in the fifth annual Michiana Lung Run recently at Pinhook Park, South Bend. Some 890 Runners participated.


50 Years Ago

June 30 1958

    A crew of 17 neighbors cultivated 92 acres of corn and beans in about 2-1/2 hours at the William Barker farm north of Atwood. Barker was seriously injured in a farm tractor-truck collision. Workers are Michael Harman, Loy Harman, Bill Thomas, Don Clase, Dallas Anglin, Joe Irwin, Ward Bradway, Claude Harmon, Jim Wolf, Luther Rarick, Ray Williamson, Tracy Cochran, Wallace Anglin, Don Rarick, Jerry Clase, Carl Bradway and Merl Wolf.

    AKRON - Karl Gast has assumed the office of postmaster of Akron following his appointment, succeeding Harley Secore who has served in that capacity for the last eight and one half years. Gast is a Democrat, while Secore is a Republican.
