    NORTH WEBSTER - A bit of U.S. history descended on North Webster and part of the Midwest yesterday.

With the lowering of a three-ton fiberglass dome over a 112-foot tower, federal and local officials celebrated the first phase of construction of the new regional Doppler radar system.

June 28 1982

    Theresa Kellogg, the 21-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Kellogg, Nappanee, was named the swimsuit winner of the Queen of Lakes competition at the 37th Annual Mermaid Festival in North Webster.


50 Years Ago

June 28 1957

    John E. Nine, North Webster, has been promoted to captain and executive officer of the Purdue Military Band, which is directed by Prof. Al Wright. John will be a senior in the pharmacy school next fall.


75 Years Ago

June 28 1932

    Recently while rummaging through some records, Edwin C. Aborn encountered a document containing a list of the streets existing in Warsaw, dating from the founding of the town in 1835 up to and including the year 1894. They explain the reason why the streets had been assigned the nomenclature by which they are respectively known.

A couple of examples: Hickory Street is said to have derived its name from the fact that a grove of trees of that variety necessarily had to be removed in order to permit construction of the street, and Morton Place is named for Indiana's war governor, Oliver P. Morton.
