June 26 10 Years Ago Trevor Ritter, son of Ridgely “Butch” and Terri Ritter, Syracuse, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout April 26. A member of Boy Scout Troop 728, he received his award at the Syracuse Church of God. Scoutmaster Don Curry and Pastor Harry Gates officiated at the ceremony. For his Eagle project, Trevor coordinated replacement of the electrical service at the Rotary Baseball Diamond in Syracuse for the Kiwanis Youth League. He is a sophomore at Wawasee High School. In his spare time, he enjoys hunting and fishing. 25 Years Ago The 24 sixth-grade students at Silver Lake Elementary School made models of the Aztec temple Tenochtitian as part of their history studies. Karen Dickey won the prize for best model, Brian Wise was second, and Sarah Conley was third. Winners of the Silver Lake school "My Favorite Teacher" essay contest are Kathleen Anderson, sixth grade, first place; Michele Slone, fourth grade, second place; and Karen Dickey, sixth grade, third place. The contest was held in honor of "Teacher Appreciation Week." Eugene England is principal of Silver Lake School. 50 Years Ago John Gerber, Milford High School’s stellar track athlete, is congratulated by his coach, Jim Allen, after winning three events and breaking two records at the Kosciusko County high school track and field meet at Pierceton. He will receive the American Legion County Council’s "Most Outstanding Athlete" trophy for setting records in the broad jump (21 ft., 4-3/4 in.) and pole vault (11 ft., 5-1/4 in.) and also winning the low hurdles. "Gerber’s brilliant performance led to his selection." Mike Stine, of Etna Green, beat his own record from last year in the mile run.
