Recently at the opening of the 500th Bob Evans restaurant in Canton, Mich., a postcard collage was featured with postcards from across the nation. The Kosciusko County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau was asked to provide several postcards. The postcard chosen for the collage was of several sailboats on Lake Wawasee, photography by Yeager, Syracuse. The collage was approximately 40 inches by 60 inches.

The Grace Belles of Grace College will finish their spring semester tour with a three-week concert tour of Chili. This year’s tour is the third time the women’s glee club and handbell choir have traveled out of the country to end their concert season. The first trip was to Ecuador in 1985, then to Chili for the first time in 1987. The Grace Belles were invited back to Chili by the Gospel Mission of South America. The group will perform at military installations, churches, and schools. Co-director of the Grace Belles, Ethel Anderson, hopes the 1988 trip will help broaden the friendship between the two cities (Santiago) and countries.

Mr. and Mrs. Lowell (Rusty) Valentine must be the proudest parents in town today! Their son, 18-year-old Warsaw High School senior, Mike Valentine, won second place in the national finals of the American Legion high school oratorical contest at Eau Claire, Wis. Second nationally out of a starting field of 355,000 high school orators throughout the United States and three countries must go down as one of the greatest achievements in Warsaw High School history. Coming so close to first, Mike probably felt a tinge of disappointment. But he can hold his head up high. There is no disappointment here--only great admiration at the hard work and great ability just to finish among the four national finalists. That’s terrific, Mike! This was the first time since 1958 that Indiana was represented in the national finals. At that time Reed Stewart, of Brazil, Ind., won the top spot. Mike wins a $2,500 scholarship to the school of his choice. “Congratulations, Mike Valentine!”

Carl Latta, Warsaw, amateur boxer, won a one-round technical knockout over Otis Surface, Auburn Golden Gloves heavyweight, in the fight-card staged at the National Guard armory in Ft. Wayne Tuesday night. The 12 bouts were refereed by Joe Louis, world’s heavyweight champion, and marked his final appearance before  defending his title against Max Schmeling in June. Surface, a veteran of two years in Golden Gloves battling, set out to make a chump of Latta but underestimated the punching ability of the National Guard champ. Latta nailed him with a whistling right and though he did not go down, he hung on for the remainder of the round and failed to answer the bell for the second round. An exhibition match between two youngsters drew an ovation from the crowd as they came out swinging and were still going strong when the bell ended the third round and the match.
