10 Years Ago Wawasee High School Building Trades class will host an open house at 4712 E. Cardinal Drive, Syracuse, just south of the high school, April 29. The house is being built for Bryan and Kari Waltz. Members of the class are Matt Bammell, John Bennett, Justin Brown, Andrew Buell, Alex Easterday, Nick Francis, Scott Gerke, Nathan Lundy, John Rainford, Trevor Ritter, Octavio Ruvalcaba, Justin Scarberry, Kyle Schang, Daniel Stoffel, Matthew Suddon, Jeremy Tubbs, Nathan Vankirk, Brandon Vanover and Rigoberto Villa. Ed Waltz is the instructor. April 30, 2005, is the 30th anniversary of the Fall of Saigon. Marine Jerry Hogan was on the U.S. Embassy roof helping people into helicopters during the evacuation. A wreath will be laid at the war memorial at the courthouse. 25 Years Ago At the end of May, Warsaw Community Schools will bid farewell to six retirees, a total of 161 years of teaching experience: Darrell Boling, presently assistant principal/instruction at WCHS, 32 years; Wanda Barfell, first-grade teacher at Madison Elementary, 41 years; Patricia Latta, presently teaching freshman English, 33 years; Kay Farrar, presently a high school counselor, 30 years; James Mayer, Winona Lake, freshman Spanish teacher, 25 years; Cliff E. Schang, Leesburg, custodian at Leesburg Elementary School, 10 years. During the Tri-Kappa Honors Banquet, 85 Warsaw Community High School seniors and 78 juniors received special recognition. Dr. Dane Miller was the guest speaker. Alberta Montgomery is Tri Kappa president, and Dick Kline is WCHS principal. 50 Years Ago Karen Allen, a fifth-grader at Syracuse Grade School, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Allen, won the fifth/sixth grade division title of the Kosciusko County spelling contest in a drama-packed finish. In the 38th round, she misspelled “cavil,” which runner-up Kenneth Detwiler, Washington fifth-grader, spelled correctly. He failed to spell the next word. Karen correctly spelled the word, plus “bombard” to win the championship. Dale Gagnon was appointed to the Sidney Town Board, replacing Roger Montel who moved to Mentone. The DAR Good Citizenship medal was presented to John Beebe, Warsaw Community High School senior, by Estelle Lynch, National Defense chairman. Mrs. Jack Beebe, Warsaw, pinned the medal to her son’s coat. 75 Years Ago Gold basketballs and footballs were presented to the lettermen of Warsaw High School at a banquet at the Hotel Hays Monday night by Principal Loren Chastain on behalf of Bert Anderson, president of Playtime Products, who was unable to attend. Footballs went to Robert Kesler, Vernon Hollar, Wes Perkins and Capt. Allen Bayne. Basketballs were given Bill Mathews, Daryl Lancaster, Bruce Howard and Capt. Curtis Garber. Coach George Fisher, Assistant Coach Wendell Walker and Superintendent James M. Leffel gave short talks. Fire, discovered by nearby residents at 2 a.m. Tuesday, destroyed a large brooder house owned by Rozella Ford, three miles southwest of Warsaw. The Warsaw Fire Department prevented flames from spreading to other houses.
