10 Years Ago Army Pfc. Chad T. Metz, son of Bill L. and Sharon M. Metz and 2003 Warsaw Community High School graduate, is deploying to Afghanistan to serve as a member of Combined Joint Task Force-76. He will join other units comprising CJTF-76 to help the Afghans. Lane Anderson has a collection of nearly every document issued to him during his service in the U.S. Army – meal passes, dog tags, payroll records, transfer orders, identification cards and pamphlets about Vietnamese customs. When he arrived for duty, it was the second time he’d seen Vietnam. Graduating with the first consolidated class at Warsaw Community High School in 1963, he accompanied his father Ken, owner of Ken Anderson Films, on a working trip around the world. 25 Years Ago Da-Lite Screen held an Easter egg hunt April 14 for all the children of their employees. Spear and George W. White were re-elected for three-year terms as directors of Lakeland Financial Corporation, the parent corporation of Lake City Bank, the oldest and largest locally owned bank in Kosciusko County (1872). 50 Years Ago Susan Crandall, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Crandall, is the spelling champion at Jefferson Grade School and will go after the county title in the fifth-sixth grade division 3. Her teacher is Ellen Rasor. Winners in the Tippecanoe Elementary Science Fair: Becky Weiland, first; Rex Heckaman, second; James Erwin, third; Gary Enders, fourth. Junior High division: Lewis Erwin, first; Brant Miller, second; John Smith, third; Karen Watkins, fourth. Denise Judy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Judy, and Phyllis Guerin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Guerin, carry the hopes of South Whitley Grade School into the final rounds of the Kosciusko County Spelling Bee. Kreamer is Denise’s teacher; Leo Metzger and Vivian Harris instruct Phyllis. 75 Years Ago Police Chief Raymond Neff said installation of a two-way radio system for the department is being considered. Officials at the police station would have direct communication with patrol cars. Cost is estimated at $1,265. Charles F. Miller, oldest member of the Sunday School class of the Christian Church of Sidney, was given a potted plant Easter Sunday. Office nurses Jean McCullough and Shirley Crooke extinguished Dr. J.R. Baum’s birthday cake as frosting catches afire. Dr. H.L. Lanahan, Anderson, will address the 23 seniors of the Mentone High School at their commencement services, it was announced by Principal Dale Kelley. Baccalaureate will be April 14 at Mentone Baptist Church with the Rev. E.E. DeWitt as speaker.
