10 Years Ago It’s all bigger, better and much, much brighter. The Warsaw Police Department opened its doors to the public Sunday afternoon with a skeleton crew of officers guiding people through the 1,760-square-foot facility on East Fort Wayne Street. The department moved from cramped quarters in city hall to the former NIPSCO building earlier this spring. The new facility offers plenty of space to grow.
25 Years Ago Warren Ulery is a quiet winner. In the city’s closest council primary race, Ulery squeaked out a victory in the Fifth District against David Lee by just nine votes. In fact, the solitude of of Ulery’s campaign continued following the final tabulations; the 67-year-old Republican victor was out of town today. Ulery claimed 99 votes and 52 percent of the vote in the GOP contest and will go on to face the Democratic opponent in November.
50 Years Ago The PTA Council of Warsaw Community Schools today in an open letter appeals to city and township taxpayers to ratify the proposed school union with neighboring Prairie Township Tuesday at the polls. The letter warns of such speculative consequences as heavier and longer tax burdens as well as loss of current autonomy, if the merger is turned down by the voters. The PTA Council consists of the president and two delegates from each school’s Parent-Teacher Association, plus the principal of each school. Officers of the PTA Council are Robert Pfeiffer, president; Mrs. Gil Gividen, vice president; Mrs. W.L. Kreicker, secretary; and William Petro Jr., treasurer.
75 Years Ago Annual May Day activities were held at Manchester College Friday where Pauline Holl was crowned as May Day queen. Attendants were Mary Miller, Glenwyn Walters, Evelyn White, Helen Parker, Marcea Friend, Eileen Beverly, Ruth Wieland, Ruth Brand and Dora Dreyer. Instead of holding the celebration on the college campus, it was staged on an island in Eel River, with a Venetian setting. Boats from Lake Waubee were used as gondolas.
