10 Years Ago Pfc. Brian E. Duffy, son of Maggie Duffy, Winona Lake, met his fellow Chesterton High School classmate, Aaron Downey, while serving in Iraq. The soldiers are stationed at Camp Cooke, Al Taji. Duffy joined the U.S. Army and the 18th Airborne Corps in April 2004. Kosciusko County Circuit Court Judge Rex Reed arrived in Vietnam in 1965 to command the 670th Transportation Company. The Nappanee Missionary Church, two miles north of Nappanee on Ind. 19, will host a celebration for Associate Pastor Don Rohrer and his wife, Donna, for their 20 years of ministry. Senior Pastor Dave Engbrecht invites the public to attend the event in the Grand Hall of the church May 1. 25 Years Ago After 17 years as Kosciusko County assessor, Avis Gunter is seeking re-election to her fifth four-year term. She began her stint as assessor in 1973 when she replaced Carl Zimmer in the final year of his term. Before that, she worked as a deputy in the assessor's office for nine years. Gunter serves as second vice president on the Association of Indiana Counties, and is a member of Warsaw Business and Professional Women and a board member of the Kosciusko County Crime Stoppers. She and husband, Everette, have two children. Carrie Beth Allen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Allen, Warsaw, competes in the Indiana American PreTeen Pageant May 4 and 5 in Indianapolis. State winners go to Disney World in November to compete for the National title. 50 Years Ago For the second consecutive year, Sherry Graff, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Duane Graff, won the Milford School's seventh/eighth grade spelling title. Her teacher is Mrs. Marquart. Carla Speicher, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl (Bill) Speicher, won the fifth/sixth grade, teacher Norma Hurford. Carla defeated Sherry in the overall school title. Philip Metcalf, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Metcalf, Leesburg, has been chosen by the Herbert Kuhn American Legion Post 253, North Webster, as their representative to Indiana Boys State. Michael Vanator, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Vanator, Route 1, Pierceton, is the alternate. The front entrance of the Warsaw Library is being torn out. Persons should use the east entrance, according to librarian James Sloan. 75 Years Ago The 1940 graduation class of Leesburg High School, one week after their commencement April 25, chaperoned by Principal Jay Hippensteel and several members of the faculty, leave for a week’s trip to Washington D.C. Carl Bibler, 22, son of the Virgil Bibler's, Warsaw, wrote home that his camp, 19th field artillery of the U.S. Army at Fort McClellan, Ala., is preparing for the Georgia state maneuvers to be held in April. He told of clearing out forests and building roads as part of the fort enlargement program. Pvt. Jack Landis, son of Paul, East Fort Wayne Street, Warsaw, is also stationed at Fort McClellan.
