10 Years Ago Kosciusko County Girl Scouts celebrated the international organization’s 93rd birthday by packing 93 bags with school supplies, which would be given to students in need. Girls gathered at the armory to make the kits, play games, eat birthday cake and dance to the music of a DJ. Among those helping were Kasey Napier, Troop 302, Syracuse, and Erin Longenecker, Troop 20, Warsaw. Indiana Lakeland Girl Scout Council honored 606 adult volunteers at the Syracuse Community Building. Marcy Borchers, Winona Lake, received an award for outstanding leader. Susan Abel, Warsaw, current board president, received a 25-year appreciation pin; Linda Blain, South Whitley, 20; Orcutt, Atwood, 15; Stevens, North Webster, 10; Mary Jo Coppes, Atwood, five. 25 Years Ago Tippecanoe Valley High School announced that the valedictorian is Barbara J. Burdge, daughter of Ross and Priscilla Burdge, Akron. She has been accepted to the Indiana University School of Music. Dana C. Feldman, daughter of David and Judy Feldman, Akron, is salutatorian. She has been accepted at the University of Indianapolis. Mason Health Care residents competed in the 1990 Senior Games during National Nursing Home Week May 13-18. The Long Term Care Games at Cardinal Center are an extension to the Senior Games: Doris Boley, Freida Miller and Jim Skillen participated. 50 Years Ago Cindy Conkle, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Conkle, Old 30 East, has been chosen as The Times-Union Calendar Girl for May. She is a senior at Warsaw High School and has been elected track queen. Larwill High School has 29 graduating this year. Richard Schroeder, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter A. Schroeder, has been named valedictorian; Richard Helfrich, salutatorian. Kay Howell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Howell, is valedictorian at Pierceton High School; Brenda Leedy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Leedy, salutatorian. H.E. “Bus” Bledsoe, local car dealer, donated a station wagon to Baker Boys’ Club. Lettering on the auto was done courtesy of Don Anglin, Warsaw. 75 Years Ago Clarence Taylor Jr., 18, north of Mentone, is hoping the eggs from his “speckled” hen will bring him blue ribbons in the annual Mentone Egg Show. Eggs from this hen of doubtful breed have won many previous prizes. He also won a free trip to the World Poultry Congress at Cleveland, Ohio. Councilman Frank M. Smith presented to the city council a request from several citizens for a street light at the corner of Bronson and Clark streets. The matter was referred to the Board of Public Works and Safety. Warsaw firemen Wednesday afternoon extinguished a big grass fire, which was threatening Camp Lucerne on the west bank of Pike Lake, by backfiring it. Residents around the camp attempted to beat the blaze out, but called firemen when a high wind caused it to get out of control.
