10 Years Ago Nineteen students from six area middle schools graduated from the R.R. Donnelley Middle School Project Wednesday. This is the third year the program has been offered to students with the mission of “exposing middle school students to workplace skills.” The program is a worthwhile and positive experience to each participant. 25 Years Ago This past Saturday, the Warsaw High School band distinguished themselves as being one of the “Sweet 16” in the Indiana State School Music Association State Finals. The Warsaw band, under the direction of Martin Becker, qualified by receiving the top division rating from all four judges at the district contest, held at Oak Hill High School. The Band entered the group one classification, which is based on difficulty of music. Only group one entries are eligible to advance to the state finals, which will be held at Southport High School in Indianapolis next week. The Warsaw band is tied with three other schools for the top scores received at the district level. The final selection is determined across the state by the 16 scores at all the district contests. Becker said, "I think we should surprise a lot of people next week." The top 16 bands will begin competition at 9 a.m. 50 Years Ago A huge plate glass window "popped out" of the Silver Lake bank Tuesday morning. Bob Zimmer, cashier, stated there was no warning but apparently a freak wind pulled the nearly one-half inch thick window from its casing and onto the sidewalk. The largest piece of glass remaining was about six inches square. The glass was at least 14 feet high and about 20 feet long.
