    President George W. Bush announced the laureates of the 2001 National Medals of Science and National Medals of Technology,  the nation’s highest science and technology honors, recently. One of the 20 recipients is Dr. Gene E. Likens, a Kosciusko County native. Dr. Likens discovered acid rain in the 1970s, which sparked public policy dialogue about ecological issues.

    Michael Bergen and Laura Engle were selected as this year’s speakers at the Warsaw Community High School baccalaureate-commencement exercises. Michael Bergen is the son of Donald and Jacqueline Bergen. He plans to attend Indiana University majoring in business economics and public policy. Laura Engle is the daughter of Lowell and Susan Engle. She plans to attend  Indiana State University majoring in radio, TV and film.

    Hats off to Bernard Fitzgerald of Mentone who made straight A’s his sophomore year at Ball State College. Son of Mrs. Iris Fitzgerald, he’s preparing for foreign service. The subjects in which he did so well are French, Russian, Spanish, Humanities and American literature.

    Kosciusko County farmers are using headlamps of their automobiles and are plowing at night in order to plant corn, between rains. Automobile passengers on state highway 15 reported seeing farmers as late at 10:30 o’clock at night plowing their fields. Farmers in the vicinity of Warsaw are among those doing most of the night plowing.
