10 Years Ago Justin Perry of Troop 777, Mentone, was awarded the Eagle Scout April 12 at Mentone United Methodist Church. He is a senior at Tippecanoe Valley High School and the son of Jamie and Angie Perry. Justin earned 21 merit badges under the guidance of scoutmaster Shawn Baker and assistant Arnold Shepherd. For his Eagle project, he made three information boxes at Potawatomi Wildlife Park in Tippecanoe. Pack 3772 held their first cake auction April 26 at the Harrison Elementary School gymnasium, with the theme “Indiana Jones.” The Scouts made 22 cakes; 13 were donated. Winners: Jacob Gottschalk, Cubmaster’s Choice; Darren Brubaker, best use of the theme; Jacob Sudlow, funniest; Peyton Zellers, best decorated cake; David Zigon, best Scout theme; Dalton Zellers, most colorful. 25 Years Ago Gertrude Kuyper, 1989 Warsaw Senior Citizens Queen, crowned Florence Horn as the 1990 Queen, who will compete in the county queen contest at Center Lake Pavilion. Whitko Wildcat Chad Patrick, son of Bill and Nancy Patrick, has decided to continue his basketball career at Grace College. The 6-1 guard helped lead his team to a 21-4 record and their first-ever semistate appearance this past season. He ended his career with 290 assists, just 25 off the school record set by Jeff Peters. In addition to earning three letters in basketball, Patrick is a four-year letter winner in baseball. Under the direction of fourth-grade teacher Judy Kinsey, the Leesburg learning fair took place on school grounds; local history buffs and artisans helped students celebrate Hoosier Pioneer Day. Fourth-grade teachers at Syracuse Elementary Larry Pletcher and Lera Rinker took their students to Timber Retreat (formerly Clarksville) in North Webster. 50 Years Ago Evangelical United Brethren Church of Etna Green was organized in 1855 by two ministers. Ground was given by George Crocko and the first building was erected in 1867 until destroyed by fire in 1878. A new church was dedicated July 5, 1885, and used until 1923. A lot on the corner of Walnut and Spring streets was purchased from Dan Halloway and the present building was completed and dedicated April 13, 1924, under the pastorate of the Rev. L.G. Bean. Present minister is the Rev. Richard Austin. New members, Epsilon chapter, Lambda Chi Omega Sorority: Mrs. David Ramsten, Mrs. Fritz Carlin, Rosemary Lehman, Mrs. Douglas Kehler and Mrs. Ronald Drudge. Steven L. Rollings, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred W. Rollings, Claypool, received his citation as an outstanding marine while aboard the USS Oklahoma City. 75 Years Ago Three drum majorettes, representing Warsaw High School, lent smartness to the high school musical contests held Saturday at Elkhart. They were Mary Moon, Betty Kelly and Mary Ellen Blosser. Kosciusko County sends three entries to the national contest in Battle Creek, Mich., in May: Margaret Bartol, Warsaw, alto clarinet; Max Shively, Leesburg, cornet; Mary Kroh, Syracuse eighth grade, baton twirler. Rose Lewallen, 85, passed away at her home in Mentone April 9. She and her sister, Stella Dillie, of Akron, were the oldest set of twins in the United States. They were accorded wide publicity in several newsreels throughout the county. She leaves six children: Loren, Ward, Ruth, Millie, Margaret and Hazel; and several grandchildren.
