Syracuse Boy Scout Troop 728 Scoutmaster Don Curry presented the Eagle Scout Award to Tyler Ritter, 15, son of Butch and Terri Ritter, Syracuse. For his Eagle project, he organized and directed the refurbishment of the handicapped access ramp at the Syracuse Church of God, where he and his family attend. Ritter began his scouting career at age 7 as a Tiger Cub Scout. His older brother, Trevor, was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout in 2003.

The fieldstone fountain in front of the old Bourbon School was constructed in 1922 by Clyde Taylor, custodian. The fountain sprayed water when built, but was turned off during the war years. Next winter, classes at the 61-year-old school will switch to the elementary school presently under construction. Efforts to save the building from demolition have been fruitless so far, but the committee hopes to save the fountain by having it designated a National Historical Marker.

Margie Merkle, 13, four-time finalist from Claypool School, won the 1965 Kosciusko County School Spelling Championship and advances to Indiana regional competition in Fort Wayne May 8. Karen Allen, Syracuse, was runner-up, misspelling “receipt” in the 3lst round. Margie correctly spelled the word, and “script” to take the title.
Michael McFarren, 12, Billy Garver, 11, and Walter Runyan, 12, all of Boy Scouts Troop 15, distributed leaflets to Winona Lake residents informing them of the clean-up process May 1-15. The street crew will make special trips to haul away trash.
George Ward, 924 E. Sheridan St., says on this date in 1898 (April 26), he left with the Fourth Indiana National Guard, Eighth Company, for Indianapolis to be inducted into the Spanish-American War. Officers from Warsaw were Capt. Charles A. Sharp, Lt. Edward Hinkley, Lt. William “Link” Hughes and Major Elmer Harter.

A contract for windstorm insurance for Kosciusko County buildings has been awarded by the commissioners to the Diddel Insurance Agency of Warsaw.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kreis, Silver Lake, entertained at their home in honor of the birthday of their son, Boyd. Guests were Marvin Bettinger, Jean Ranstead, Bob Gearhart, Arlo Spangle and Robert Snyder.
Paul D. “Tony” Hinkle, basketball coach and athletic director of Butler University, will be the principal speaker at the banquet Thursday at the Elks’ temple. Warsaw and Mentone High School basketball teams, coaches and principals are guests. Dave Rankin, Purdue football captain and All-American, is a special guest.
Mr. and Mrs. John Byland Sr., Syracuse, were feted with a dinner March 31 in the home of their son, John Jr., Syracuse, in honor of their 54th wedding anniversary.
