10 Years Ago Jane McConnell Chinworth, 81, vividly recalls where she was and what she was doing when she heard about the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Sunday morning, Dec. 7, 1941. She, along with other nursing students, huddled around a radio as reports of the tragedy unfolded. Chinworth is a 1941 graduate of Warsaw High School, 1944 graduate of nursing school, and now working at Murphy Medical Center, Warsaw. “Dr. Murphy came in with a letter he received from the state saying they were considering drafting nurses from Indiana,” she said. She went into the Army and was stationed at a military hospital in Martinsburg, W.Va. 25 Years Ago Laura Anderson, a third-grader from Silver Lake Elementary School, will represent Warsaw Community Schools in the state Invention Convention in Indianapolis. Her winning invention at the local competition was an automatically-timed fish feeder constructed from a clock, a tin can and a lid. Other top winners were Amy Durst, David Compton and Heather Williamson, Atwood Elementary; Rebekah Hildebrant, Jefferson Elementary; Adam Burris, Silver Lake Elementary; Scott Davidson, Washington Elementary. The Adopt-A-School program, formed in 1986, began when United Telephone adopted Lincoln Elementary. According to coordinator Gina Smith, the purpose of the program is to bring businesses and schools together for support and the sharing of ideas and equipment. All eight Warsaw elementaries have been adopted by a business. 50 Years Ago Warsaw’s Ted Clater and Perry Webb won firsts in the half-mile run and 440-yard dash respectively during the Concord, Syracuse, Warsaw triangular track meet at Fisher Field. Clater skipped over the course in 2:11.7 while Webb was once around in 53 seconds flat. Other Warsaw firsts were Jim Webster, high hurdles; Mike Chambers, shot put; Terry Yeiter and Butch Johnson, high jump; Mike DeFord, pole vault. Errol White won the 100-yard dash handily. Timer Don Geozeff thought his watch had turned fickle when clocking the sprinter in :09.7. Syracuse-Wawasee Chamber of Commerce and Mount Wawasee will sponsor a float to be entered in the 500 Festival Parade in Indianapolis Memorial Day. Called “Year-Round Recreation,” the float is 60-feet long, 10-feet wide and will present a picture of the various recreation activities in Kosciusko County. 75 Years Ago Billy Williams Cummings, native Warsawan named after the Billy Williams of political fame in the early days of Warsaw and builder of Warsaw’s first street car line, a horse-drawn street car which ran on wooden track rails from the court house to East Scott Street, will celebrate his 79th birthday anniversary March 22. Mrs. Robert D. Brown, East Center Street, mailed a box of chocolates to her son Dale, former genial clerk at Watson’s Drug Store, to Peoria, Ill. for his birthday March 4. He graduated from Warsaw High School and Indiana University and now is a salesman for Carnegie Steel Corp., Peoria. Mrs. Lynn Kramer, niece of the Robert Browns, and living in Sioux City, Iowa, won a new Buick and 1,000 gallons of gasoline.
