10 Years Ago At the Saturday Indiana Guard Reserve drill in the Warsaw Armory, the swearing-in ceremony resulted in the following individuals being inducted: Staff Sgt. Larry A. Wilkinson, Cromwell; Sgt. Michael Houze, Leesburg; and Sgt. Kenneth Hillis, Warsaw. Capt. Greg Smith, 1st Brigade, said the Warsaw Armory team is the recruiting leader in Indiana, having grown from two to 18 men in the past few months. The IGR stands ready to assist in state emergencies at the request of the governor. 25 Years Ago Running, biking and walking for more than 325 miles, Michael Minich has spent the last six days canvassing the 3rd District, encouraging people to get out and vote. Minich, a Mishawaka resident, started the 500-mile venture on Saturday in South Bend and plans to end the run in Elkhart on Friday. He said he finds politics to be stimulating and exciting, something that makes a difference in peoples' lives. 50 Years Ago Four Warsaw High School students were to compete in the mathematics achievement contest held today at Indiana University in Bloomington. Alan Tschetter is competing in geometry. Dennis Harrell, Brian Smyth and Bob Latta are competing in comprehensive mathematics. They had finished near the top in regional competition several weeks ago. Tschetter and Latta were first in their categories. 75 Years Ago The legal battle to change the name of Syracuse to Wawasee was deadlocked. Warren T. Colwell, town attorney, held the upper hand. Originally, the petition carried 768 names, 36 more than the necessary two-thirds of the town's qualified voters. Colwell must decide whether 150 of these signers may legally withdraw their names. If so, the number will not be sufficient to force an election on the issue.
