10 Years Ago Craig J. Allebach is a candidate for the mayor's office of Warsaw. He is challenging Ernie Wiggins, who has held the post since March 1, 1997, and was also a former city councilman, 1984-1997. Allebach wrote, "I believe I offer Warsaw a choice that brings a difference." 25 Years Ago One lane of Ind. 25, south of Warsaw, was closed most of this morning when a truck hauling 12 tons of grain wrecked on the side of the road. The driver, Gene F. Newcomer, 37, Rt. 4, LaGrange, received cuts and abrasions to his head and was still being treated at Kosciusko Community Hospital this morning. According to Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department Deputy Jeff Bronsing, Newcomer was eastbound on Ind. 25 when his truck ran off the edge of the road, then flipped on its side. Newcomer was driving for Wana Feed Inc. of Shipshewana. The accident occurred shortly after 9 a.m. and crews were still working late this morning to clear the grain from the roadway. 50 Years Ago Captain Harry Smith, of the Salvation Army, announced today that $258.50 had been received for the Whitaker Fund. Plans are to place canisters in the Warsaw American Legion home, Elks Lodge and other centers in hopes of raising more money to help the two Warsaw brothers recover from severe burns they suffered more than a week ago. Richard, 11, and Tom, 12, were burned when a gasoline can exploded at the Whitaker garage. Their parents are Mr. and Mrs. Travis Whitaker, 315 North Cedar St., Warsaw. 75 Years Ago The grand award in the third annual Mentone Egg Show was presented to Dale Nellans, Mentone, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. V. Nellans, at the conclusion of a banquet at the Mentone Community Building last night. His exhibit was entered in class 6 for grade and high school students. He received the large Kurtin & Kurtin Rotating Cup. Major prize winners were: Frank Merkle, in the hatcherymen's class, awarded a silver loving cup; and Mrs. Frances Kehoe, in class 4 for farmers' flocks under 500 hens, awarded the Creighton Bros. trophy. A capacity crowd filled the community building. The program opened with music by the Mentone High School band, followed by entertainment by the Coffing sisters. Speaker of the evening was Col. George Buyer, introduced by Charles Manwaring.
