  The Indiana chess champion’s preferred opening moves have changed over the year, a necessary evolution since he’s in first grade now. “Double king pawn unless they do D4 and I have to do D5,” said AJ Jansen, 7, who recently won the 2002 Indiana State Chess Grade Championship at the first-grade level, a title he took last year as a kindergartner. The Harrison Elementary School student hasn’t lost any of his enthusiasm for the game. Just to keep things interesting, he’s got a little competition at home in the form of his 5-year-old brother, Nicholas.

  Several hundred people were estimated to have participated in Saturday’s dedication ceremonies and open house at the Kosciusko Community YMCA, as various officials saw a $1.5 million dream become a reality. In addition to the open house and tours of the renovated facility, about 100 people listened to speeches by State Rep. Thames Mauzy, Warsaw Mayor Jeff Plank, YMCA Board President Roy Hori, Executive Director Curtis Meschke and others.

  Mr. and Mrs. Herbert E. Mann, Warsaw, have just returned from a week’s cruise in the Caribbean with stop-overs at Puerto Rico and St. Thomas Island. The trip was awarded to Mr. Mann for being named Honor Council Winner for 1961 by the tractor division of Ford Motor Company and Indiana Tractor Sales Inc. in Indianapolis, distributors of Ford equipment in Indiana. Mr. Mann is zone manager for Indiana Tractor sales in North-Central Indiana.

  A.I. Nelson, president of the Farmers’ Bank of Mentone, is now making preparations to open the First National Bank of Warsaw in the Trust Company building, at the corner of Center and Buffalo Streets. Eugene T. White, of Princeton, Ill., has been selected as cashier of the new banking institution.
