Winona Lake Town Council member Dick Taylor accepted a donation from Wilmer and Verna Bartel for the canal project. The first phase of dredging along both sides of the canal is complete, but much more work needs to be done. The second and third phases call for the construction of seawalls to prevent sediment from filling the canal again, a final dredging down the center of the canal and restoration of trees, grass and flowers along the banks. Taylor said the last time the canal was dredged was in 1955. Since then, sediment has built up where it is difficult to get small boats through the canal.
