The Kosciusko Community YMCA board of directors announced they have signed an agreement to purchase the Warsaw Racquet Club and the adjoining 10 acres. The club was closed March 31. The YMCA plans to reopen the facility for tennis in late summer. Mayor Ernie Wiggins proclaimed April 25 as Red Hat Society Day as members celebrated the anniversary of the formation in 1998 at the American Table. 25 Years Ago Top salesmen at Claypool Elementary School were Jesse Hunt, first; Toby Shively, second; Stacy Denny, third; Janna Knisely, fourth. Wawasee’s Kriss Eisenhour managed to pull away from the field in the 100-meter hurdles to earn one of her two first-place finishes in the Northern Lakes Conference meet at Warsaw Tuesday night. She helped lead the Lady Warriors to a third-place finish in the meet. A Warsaw baseball team will participate in the First Invitational Baseball Tourney in Moscow this July. The 18 players will compete against teams from Czechoslovakia, Holland, Italy, Japan and the USSR. 50 Years Ago Members of the Warsaw Button Club, along with many other state clubs, will attend the Indiana Button Society silver jubilee April 24 to 25 in Lafayette, with the theme “Silver Bells and Cockel Shells.” Collectors compete for awards for their rare historical buttons as well as for other fine types of china, enamel, glass and bone buttons used in past centuries. Mrs. Harry Wessel, Silver Lake, is the state treasurer; Mrs. Charles Byers, Nappanee, is in charge of exhibits and all other arrangements. Leonard Kline, son of Mr. and Mrs. T.L. Kline, Syracuse, has been chosen by the Syracuse American Legion, Wawasee Post 223, as their representative to Boys’ State. Michael Buhrt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Buhrt, is the alternate. 75 Years Ago Workmen on Main Street in Syracuse, in front of the U.B. Church, excavated in some places to a depth of 22 feet for the new sewer system. Most of the seven miles of tiling will be laid several feet below the level of Syracuse Lake, adjoining the town on the east, and will be several feet below Turkey Creek. Problem is solved by pumping water from holes dug along each side of the main excavations. Miner Lumber Company of Warsaw is supplying 150,000 board feet of shoring lumber – 17 tons of asphalt, 20 tons of reinforced steel, 1514 barrels of cement, 1400 cubic yards of sand and gravel and 221,000 bricks are required; also construction of 150 manholes.The sewer will empty into a disposal plant to be built on the west side of town. Engineer Donald H. Lessig, Warsaw, who drew the plans and is in charge, expects the job to be finished in about 15 months. Eston E.
