10 Years Ago To say the least, basketball is in Al Rhodes blood. Even turning in his resignation as Warsaw’s boys basketball coach Thursday afternoon, he couldn’t walk away from the game all together. “I do wanna make it clear I’m not done with basketball,” Rhodes said. “Someday I’d like to make it at the college or pro level, but that’s six or seven years away.” For now, the 49-year-old will keep busy by working with Five Star Basketball Camps, running the Al Rhodes Basketball School in Fort Wayne, and working with the development of young players from the Bahamas. He will remain a math teacher at WCHS.
25 Years Ago The Times-Union columnist John Davis has been chosen the State Department of Natural Resources Outdoor Writer of the Year. He is one of four individuals and organizations receiving conservation awards for 1986 from the state. He was honored by Jim Ridenour, DNR director and James Lahey, chairman of the Natural Resources Commission.
50 Years Ago Warsaw High School lettermen pose with Detroit Lion linebacker Wayne Walker after receiving individual awards recently at the Elks athletic banquet. They are: Jack Cook, track; Dave Evans, golf; Dick Lesh, Minear award and football; John Gawthrop, cross country; Dave Johnson, basketball; and Donnie Phillips, baseball. Ben Shafer was the winner of the Fisher football award.
75 Years Ago Mrs. Dan Omspaugh has returned home from a week’s visit in Fort Wayne with Mr. Omspaugh. She also attended a regular meeting of the Beethoven Musical Coterie Club at the Simmers school of Music of which she is a member
