10 Years Ago Women in local law enforcement and the military were honored by American Legion Post #49 April 30. Sally McConnell Nichols, a World War II veteran, gave a history of women in the Armed Forces and talked about her experiences as a WAVE. Don Nichols is Post commander; Lenora Stump, first vice commander; Bob Morrison, second vice commander. County commissioner Avis Gunter presented certificates of appreciation to all those recognized. Kim Nguyen, science department teacher at Wawasee High School, has been named head coach for the boys soccer program. As a player, he earned four varsity letters. He replaces Paul Boyd. Scott DeHart remains as girls golf coach and replaces Darrell Carr as head coach for the wrestling program. 25 Years Ago Leaders for the 1990 United Way Campaign are Jim Evans, Syracuse, campaign manager, and Don Tosby, Warsaw, vice chairman. Evans is executive vice president of Augsburger’s Super Valu stores; Tosby currently serves as president of Pike Lake Conservation Association. Leah L. Gagnon, daughter of Cliff and Irene Gagnon, Leesburg, has been named a U.S. National Award winner in speech and drama. Gagnon, a Warsaw Community High School student, was nominated by drama teacher Becky White. Carl Wireman, Warsaw, caught a 7-pound largemouth bass from Hoffman Lake by using a No. 4 yellow Mepps spinner on a 6-pound test line. It took 15 minutes to land the fish. Mr. and Mrs. Larry Mellott, Etna Green, were honored by Jacques Seed Company in Prescott, Wis., for outstanding seed sale accomplishments. 50 Years Ago Syracuse Civil Defense Unit was put on alert by City Director Earl Money for Syracuse and surrounding areas after the tornado emergency Palm Sunday, April 11, until the “all clear” was sounded for the district. At 7:30 p.m. the Civil Defense truck with Tom Gilbert, Floyd Schlotterback, Larry Weaver, Earl Cooper, Jim McClintic, Charles Hall, Robert Dean and Money arrived at the Mid-Way Trailer Court between Goshen and Dunlap, furnishing lights and aiding in the rescue work. The unit set up a generator which ran for 17 continuous hours. Walter Ritter and Ralph Knisely manned the collection center set up in the back of the Budget Loan building. Six Warsaw physicians helped administer aid: Doctors E.A. Reed, Thomas Keough, William Cron, John Arford, R.S. Snider and Leonard Brooks. 75 Years Ago Two Mishawaka boys, Eddie Wallis and Tom Pressler, both 15, rode their bicycles to Warsaw to spend a few days at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John R. Boice on North Lake Street. They left Mishawaka about 8 a.m. and arrived in Warsaw about 4 p.m., forced to buck a stiff wind most of the way. Milo Stookey, middle-aged farmer of north of Warsaw, suffered a left shoulder dislocation in a tug of war with a cow Wednesday morning. He was taken to the McDonald Hospital for X-ray examination by Dr. Winton Thomas, Leesburg. Approximately 30 members of the Claypool High School junior business and economics classes paid a visit to the Times and Union offices Wednesday afternoon. Charles Reece is the teacher.
