10 Years Ago Artist and children’s book illustrator Rene King Moreno, a former Warsaw resident who now lives in Chicago, will visit the Warsaw Community Public Library Monday with her newest book, “Siesta,” released April 1. Her book “Under the Lemon Moon,” written by Edith Hope Fine, won a Parents’ Choice Award Silver Honor. The 71st annual Burket alumni and auxiliary banquet will be April 30 in the Burket United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. Classes to be honored are 1915, 1920, 1925, 1930, 1935, 1940, 1945, 1950 and 1955. The Ninth Annual YMCA Spring Fashion Show will be held May 24 in the Shrine Building at the fairgrounds. After a luncheon, there will be modeling of fashions from Elder-Beerman and J.C. Penney. 25 Years Ago In celebration of Earth Day April 21, Susan Coppes, 4-H junior leader, Karen Lowry, youth agent, Heather Lamb, 4-H’er, Joan Younce, home economic agent and Vic Virgil, agriculture agent planted a sycamore tree on the court house lawn. The seeds had traveled to space and were later germinated at Purdue University. The current edition of Nostalgia Magazine has a story about Orange County, Fla., that was written by North Webster resident Kathryn Lemmon. Warsaw’s Bob Taylor wrestled in the 123-pound class of the Wrestling Central Regional National in LaCrosse, Wis., April 11-15. He placed second and was defeated in the finals 7-4. Max Jones, of Jones Appliance, and Jean Northenor, Lake City Bank, sponsored him. 50 Years Ago Russell Harman, principal of Adams Elementary, conducted a workshop at Lincoln for elementary teachers in the new mathematics teaching approach to start in Warsaw Schools next September. Floyd Hollar is Lincoln principal; teachers are Mrs. Terry Klondaris, Mrs. Richard Siefken, Mrs. J. Raymond Schutz, Mrs. Floyd Hollar, Mrs. Glen Longenecker and Mrs. Larry Carey. Plain Township residents voted whether they preferred to remain in the Lakeland Community School Corp. or join the Warsaw Community School system. By a 67-33 percent majority (560 votes to 270), voters decided to become part of the Warsaw School system. Warsaw School Board president is Ethan Kaufman; James Stucky is president of Lakeland School Board. 75 Years Ago One-room district schools in our county, many abandoned long years ago when township schools were consolidated, are becoming fewer and fewer as township trustees are disposing of the old frame and brick buildings with their adjacent playgrounds one by one. Washington Township’s Black-Trump schoolhouse and property, closed these many years, will be sold to the highest bidder April 13 at offices of Trustee Claude Robbins. The site is one and one-half miles east of Pierceton, across from the Charles Trump farmhouse. Amazing how the price of flowers and corsages go so high around a vacation. Try and buy a gardenia, a little one, as big as a half dollar, for less than 75 cents.
