10 Years Ago Twenty-four middle school students are better prepared for careers after high school, thanks to an innovative program at a local industry. R.R. Donnelley & Sons’ Middle School Project, in its second year, recently recognized the 24 graduates of its program. The students were divided into classes - advanced web page design, catalog page design and hands-on training, and for six weeks two hours per week learned their trade from Donnelley employees who volunteered to teach.
25 Years Ago Travel Champs - Members of the championship team for the Michiana Women’s B-Team Travel League tournament, held at the South Bend Racquet Club recently, are: Becky Allender, Diane Lawson, Bev Clampitt, Joani Halcomb, Krista Koors, Delores Hearn, Cindy Bradley and Erma Nicola. Hearn and Koors were also second court winners, while Bradley and Nicola were first court runnerup, and Halcomb and Allender third court runnerup.
50 Years Ago Extensive damage was reported today at the Champion Door Corp. plant north of Warsaw on Ind. 15, where the top of the roof was ripped from the building during the storm here Monday afternoon. Part of the roof rolled up at the east side while other pieces knocked out windows in the nearby Carey Construction Co. building. A Champion Door spokesman said this morning that production has stopped because of water on the floors and workmen today were trying to save the $10,000 roof. Most of $40,000 worth of doors stored inside the building have been removed, but the extent of their damage, if any, is not known.
75 Years Ago Approximately 80 members and guests attended the ladies night of the Warsaw Rotary club held at the Hotel Hays. Musical entertainment was furnished by Mrs. F.C. Olds, Mrs. George Franklin and Mrs. Ralph Lucier. The speaker of the evening was Miss Imogene Warder, lecturer of Hollywood, Calif. Her subject was “The Situation in Spain.” President L.N. (Pete) Thorn presided as toastmaster.
