The second annual Fat and Skinny Tire Festival in Winona Lake featured bicycling-related events and vendors. On May 1, streets were cleared of four-wheeled vehicles for a series of races around the island “loop” of streets. Jeff Noffsinger, Warsaw, led the pack during one of the racing events. Gabi Lancaster, Warsaw, 6, pedaled her way around the tricycle race course Saturday.
Rachel Stichter, distance runner for Wawasee High School, has committed to run track and cross country for Ohio State University. Her parents are Dawn and Kirk. Wawasee distance coach is Grace Stichter and athletic director is Mary Hurley.
Thursday, May 5, marks the 54th Annual National Day of Prayer in the United States. The local event will be held in the Shrine Building at the fairgrounds.

Hoosier Water Company conducted fire training seminars with local fire and street departments, and offered to provide better understanding of the operation of the water system and fire hydrants. Hoosier Water Superintendent Joe Dock presented Fire Chief Russell Fifer a Partners in Community Service certificate.
Times-Union photographer Gary Nieter won first place in the black and white photo category in the 1989 Emergency Medical Services Commission of Indiana contest. The award-winning shot of a fire on Washington Street in Warsaw was taken last June during his first week of work. A 1977 graduate of Grace College, he taught at Warsaw Community High School while taking photos part-time for the newspaper before becoming full-time photo editor. Sports writer Chris Inebnit received third place from Indiana Professional Journalists.

Fathers and sons tried their luck at a game of skittles during father and son night at Baker Boys Club. Fred McKown Jr. and Pepper, Dwight, Brian and Charles F. Smith, Bob Barsh and Harry Beatty, Dr. Robert Conrad and Bobby participated.
Charles Garner, principal of Leesburg High School, presented Larry Bishop the most valuable player award at the Lions Club athletic banquet. The trophy is donated annually by the Lakeland Printing Co. to the outstanding varsity basketball player. Jack Ford is the coach.
Mrs. Michael R. Williams and small son Christopher have returned to their home at Harrison and Market streets after a vacation in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where they visited with former Warsawans, the Gary Niemanns.

Robert M. Murtaugh, 347 N. Buffalo St., has been issued a student pilot license by the Civil Aeronautics Authority. When he has a minimum of eight hours dual flight instruction, he may fly solo, provided his instructor rules him competent. A minimum of five hours solo time is necessary to raise his rating to solo pilot.
Winners of Elks Easter egg hunt: Cecil Latta, 35 colored eggs for first prize; Charles Shepler, 31, second; Forrest Patterson, 22, third; Aneta Lear, 21, fourth. Despite the cold weather, over 300 children turned out for the event.
Howard A. Smith, employed at the Unique Baking Company, Warsaw, sustained a broken right wrist Tuesday afternoon when cranking a car. He received treatment at the Murphy Hospital.
