Former Warsaw Community High School basketball coach Al Rhodes was as intense and passionate as ever as he directed the West Team in the McDonald’s All-American High School Basketball Game at the University of Notre Dame’s Joyce Center. The West Team lost 115-110. Rhodes’ assistant coaches were long-time friend Pete Smith and former Grace College player Matt Moore, who now coaches with Rhodes at Logansport High School.
Mary Masters, Potawatomie Indian sculptor and storyteller, returns to the Old Jail Museum April 16 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Masters creates lifelike sculptures of Indian chiefs and maidens and Santa figures from different countries. Her work is on display in the Souder Village in Archbold, Ohio, and the Smithsonian Institution.

March 28 is the last day for seniors in their 30-year-old high school building on Smith Street When they return from spring break April 9, they will enter the new high school on Ind. 15S; the 265,000 square-foot building houses senior, junior, sophomore and freshmen students. In the fall of 1990, the Smith Street building will be known as Lakeview Middle School and that on Union Street will be Edgewood Middle School. Freshman Principal William Landrigan was part of a convocation at the freshman high on their last day together.
Poulson Ford, Etna Green, earned a 25-year Dealer Award from Ford Motor Credit Company in Niles, Mich. William Fackler is Poulson Ford president.
R.R. Donnelley & Sons, North America’s largest printer, is building a new facility in Singapore.

Verl L. Gray, Sidney, has been nominated for postmaster by President Johnson, according to an announcement from Washington. He replaces temporary postmistress, Mrs. Harold Maloy. Dale Sands resigned at postmaster at Claypool to take over as a carrier on a rural route. Alton Boggs will be a temporary replacement, but it is being recommended to President Johnson that he be appointed permanently.
Tippecanoe Valley School Board: Loren Tridle, William Rathbun, James Gates, James Tibbits. New teachers: Phyllis Gearhart, Akron, will teach an additional third-grade class at the Akron School; Jean Kerlin, Silver Lake, will teach the Akron kindergarten class of Norma Hartman, who is working on her master’s degree. Robert DuBois, an elementary teacher at Beaver Dam and assistant coach at Akron High School, will also take a leave to work on a master’s degree.

NIPSCO employees report that the ground is frozen solid four to five feet deep. Water mains have been found frozen and burst, necessitating much trouble in digging down to repair them. Grave diggers have been using steam to thaw out grave sites to permit excavation. Game wardens report that ice on some lakes in the county is nearly 24 inches thick.
With 72 years behind him, Charles Taylor, retired rural mail carrier serving 18 years, celebrated his 18th birthday. He was born on leap year day, and Feb. 29 rolls around once every four years. He feels fit as a fiddle. Taylor is a Spanish-American War vet.
Popular names for babies born Feb. 29, 1940: “Confucius” for boys and “Lena” for girls.
