The look around the fire stations is both old and new. Incorporating an “old” Warsaw fire department logo, the newly designed duty wear will be smoke gray T-shirts with the logo on front and back, Chief Matt Warren advised Warsaw Board of Works members recently. The more casual look will be complemented with gray sweatshirts and windbreakers. During appearances in public, firefighters will appear in shirts with badges, Warren said.

Sidney native Dr. Gene E. Likens, now the Institute of Ecosystem Studies Director for New York Botanical Garden, Cary Arboretum in Millbrook, N.Y., was recently awarded The New York Academy of Sciences Award for 1986. This was “in recognition of his worldwide influence in ecology and environmental education.” Dr. Likens’ research at the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study “led to discoveries of major importance including ‘acid rain’ and (impacts of) forest harvesting.” The award consisted of a certificate of citation and $5,000. Likens graduated with degrees from Manchester College and the University of Wisconsin.

This recipe was from The Woman’s Exchange column for Rhubarb Upside-Down Cake.
Cream 1 cup sugar and 1/4 cup butter. Add 1 egg, beaten and mix. Sift 2 cups cake flour, 2 teaspoons baking powder and mix into batter alternately with 1 cup milk. Mix until smooth, but do not beat. Spread 2 cups cooked rhubarb in an 8-inch square buttered cake pan and sprinkle 1 cup brown sugar over it. Pour batter over rhubarb & bake for 35 minutes at 350 degrees (or until cake tester come out clean). Invert upon removal from oven.

Mysterious noises and a real-for-sure ghost, which prowled the house at night laying cold clammy hands on sleepers’ foreheads, today caused a well-known Warsaw man and his daughter to move from an east Warsaw residence after occupying it only six days. Both were convinced the house is haunted. Another family previously moved from the same house, alleging it was “haunted.”
