    Hundreds of American flags waved in the spring breeze as more than 400 North Manchester citizens took to the streets yesterday in support of troops fighting the war in Iraq. The Support Our Troops Rally, organized by Colleena Jiminez and Shelly Lambert, was “not a pro-war rally,” Jiminez said. “It’s to show support to the troops over there.” Jiminez’s military husband is in the Middle East, and she wanted to show her daughter the right way to demonstrate her opinions after her 8-year-old became upset over anti-war protests.

     Ways To Use Applesauce. •Moisten muffins by adding applesauce to batter. •Create a special spread for bread by whipping applesauce and butter together. •Add one cup of applesauce to oatmeal cookie batter for a lunchbox treat. •Fill dessert crepes with applesauce. •Dip fresh vegetables into applesauce. •Mix equal amounts of applesauce with cottage cheese or yogurt. •Add applesauce to meat balls or meatloaf for a wonderful new flavor. •Sprinkle nutmeg over chilled applesauce and top with a scoop vanilla ice cream. •Fold together equal amounts of applesauce and whipped cream. Top with chopped walnuts.

    Mrs. Lamoin (Marie) Hand, a 60-year-old housewife who resides two miles northwest of Akron in Fulton County, is Indiana’s Mother of the Year. Mrs. Hand, whose husband is a public building contractor, is the mother of three children. Quentin, the oldest son, is an ordained Methodist minister living in Atlanta, Ga. The younger son, Rev. John Hand, is also an ordained Presbyterian minister in Roselle, Ill. She also has a daughter, Mrs. Gary (Tamera) Shriver, who resides in Noblesville.

    Winners of the county high school oratorical and declamation contests were awarded their formal championships last night at Silver Lake as follows: Devon Swick, Burket, defeated eight other contestants in the declamation contest; Esther Stookey, Atwood, took second; and Sybil Saylor, Warsaw, was third.
    Priscilla Rhode, Syracuse, was first in the oratorical contest, winning over four contestants. Sam Blue, Mentone, was second and John Reasoner, North Webster, third. Professor Fred Conkling, Manchester College, was the judge.
