    AKRON - Nick Huffman and Jessica Stiffler, third-grade students at Akron Elementary School, were the first- and second-place winners of the fourth annual "Young Writers and Illustrators" contest sponsored by WNIT-TV, Barnes & Noble and Reading Rainbow, the Emmy award-winning PBS children's series.

Nick is the son of Max and Lori Huffman, Rochester, and Jessica is the daughter of Steve and Lori Stiffler, Akron.

    Paula Calhan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Calhan, 240 Gilliam Drive, Warsaw, was initiated recently into Phi Mu Sorority at Indiana University, Bloomington.

Rusty Styles, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John E. Styles Jr., Warsaw, is one of 18 seniors and one junior elected to the Wabash College chapter of Phi Beta Kappa national honorary society.

    John Nine of North Webster has been promoted from major to lieutenant colonel in the Purdue University bands. A senior in the pharmacy school, he has been assigned to duties in the executive office. Band members receive credit in ROTC work.

April 28 1933

    Charles Butler, son of Carla Butler, of this city, saxophonist and vocal soloist with Amos Otstot's Crimson Serenader orchestra of Indiana University, becomes a Kansas City Nighthawk. The famous Indiana University orchestra has been taken over by Joe Sanders, owner of the more famous Kansas City Nighthawks, which Coon and Sanders founded 11 years ago and which became the most famous radio orchestra on the air for several years. Sanders heard the Indiana University boys in an audition a few nights ago and dismissed his former orchestra and immediately closed a contract with the college boys.
