10 Years Ago Part of the fun at the Taste of Agriculture in Kosciusko County recently was a goat milking contest. Contestants randomly drew a goat to milk. The organizers were kind enough to spare the use of billies and dry goats. The milkers were given a cup and the first to fill it was the winner. And the winner was - Warsaw Police Department DARE officer Joe Hawn. 25 Years Ago Students have tramped the wooden floors of the Laketon Elementary school for the last 91 years. Now, unless two Laketon residents can get the support they need to save it, the two-story landmark may face the wrecking ball. The North Manchester Community Schools Corp. decided recently to build a new school in Laketon on land it purchased behind the existing school. Tentative plans are for the old school to be torn down to make room for a new parking lot and a playground. 50 Years Ago In recognition of “Courtesy Week,” the Warsaw Junior High School students were chosen by the student council for “year around courtesy in all situations.” Final selections were decided by the faculty. Chosen were: Suzanne Wiltrout and Lex Dalton, eighth grade; and Dawn Inai and Ronald Stafford, seventh grade. They will be presented awards in May on “Awards Day.” Parents of these “most courteous” students are Mr. and Mrs. Dale Wiltrout, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Dalton, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Inai, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Stafford, all of Warsaw. 75 Years Ago The grand award in the third annual Mentone egg show was presented to Dale Nellans, Mentone, at the conclusion of a banquet at the Mentone community building recently. His exhibit was entered in class 6 for grade and high school students. He received the large Kurtin & Kurtin rotating cup. Major prize winners were: Frank Merkle, in the hatcherymen’s class, awarded a silver loving cup; and Mrs. Frances Kehoe, in class 4 for farmers’ flocks under 500 hens, awarded the Creighton Bros. trophy.
