10 Years Ago The school full of student desks in the old elementary school have found a new home a continent away in Vurpar, Transylvania, Romania. Lions Club member Chuck Hapner introduced Jim Sack and Simon Dragan to town council members recently. Sack, of Fort Wayne, and Dragan, of South Whitley, formerly of Romania, operate the Vurpar Project, an organization designed to bring the Eastern European country into modern times. Council President Kay Andrews said the Vupar Project is welcome to the desks.
25 Years Ago Warsaw Community High School senior Rick Fox did a lot of sitting during the regular basketball season after the IHSAA ruled him ineligible. But he’s making up for lost time during the “all-star” season. First he played in the Capital Classic game in Washington, D.C., and today he’s participating in the Derby Classic in Louisville. His third and final all-star appearance will most likely be in the Indiana-Kentucky series in June.
50 Years Ago Mary Ann Metzger and Dorothea Shepherd of Silver Lake sat together in the crowded auditorium of North Manchester High School at the recent convention of more than 2,700 members of the Indiana Sunshine Society. Mary Ann is president of the Silver Lake chapter. Highlights of the day were the awarding of $450 nursing education scholarships to 12 girls, the installation of officers and a variety program. Faye Whitcraft, North Manchester, is the new state president.
75 Years Ago Members of the Kosciusko County Rifle Association’s pistol team completed the winter marksmanship league match contests conducted by the United States Rifle Association and finished in ninth place against hundreds of other clubs. Warsaw marksmen were classed in the highest classification, expert class, and competed against the best shooters in the country. Special honors went to Capt. Milo D. Snyder, Lt. Charles H. Rise and George Mowery for shooting perfect 50 scores.
