10 Years Ago Paul Showalter was presented the Bronze Star and other medals he earned 60 years ago in World War II during a surprise ceremony at Lakeland Health Care Facility in Milford. He spent two years as an infantryman in the 45th, "following Patton" across France and into Germany. After the war, he just wanted to return to his farm near Leesburg and job at Dalton Foundries. The awards were presented by Paul's great nephew, Col. Ross Waltemath of the National Guard. 25 Years Ago Michelle Baker, Cadette Troop 238 leader from Pierceton, created the winning logo in a contest during Girl Scout Week in March that will be used on council promotional items. The next tournament is at Plymouth Saturday. 50 Years Ago Gordon Sand, Jaycee president, presented a book by the local Junior Chamber of Commerce titled "Outstanding Young Men of America" ( from across the nation) to James Sloan, librarian of the Warsaw Community Public Library. Mrs. Barbara Bibler observed the presentation. Her late husband, Leonard, was a past president and longtime member, being named "Outstanding Young Jaycee of Warsaw" in 1963. Spelling bee winners at Pierceton School: Lise Rood, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Rood, fifth-sixth, teacher – Mrs. Donald Neher; Elaine Carlin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Carlin, seventh-eighth, teacher – Mrs. Max Lenwell. 75 Years Ago Warsaw Street Commissioner John Lee reports that Saturday his crew worked all day and used live steam to thaw out and open up all catch basins and frozen sewers in the city to permit the heavy downpour to drain away. County Agent Joe Clark said that a colt school will be held March 6 at 9:30 a.m. at the Cloid D. Swartz farm, one and three-quarter miles north of Sidney and one-half mile west in Monroe Township. At 1 o'clock in the afternoon P.T. Brown, Purdue, will demonstrate trimming and care of colt's feet. Plans are under way for the organization of a Boy Scout troop at Leesburg and Frank Geiger, Elkhart, area executive, will meet with leaders in Leesburg Thursday.
