Akron Elementary School’s fifth-grade students participated in the 2004 David Deuter Memorial Essay Contest sponsored by the Indiana Troopers Association in memory of Trooper Deuter. The theme was “What Being a Good Citizen Means To Me.” Three class winners were Dylan Murphy, Kendra Roberts and Tyler Hanish.

Cousin Clem: The first death in Washington Township was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Bratt in 1838. A visiting Methodist missionary, William Divinney, officiated at the service. The Hillcrest Cemetery in Pierceton opened a year later. A 2x8 inch oak or cedar marker is placed at the grave, the top of which is carefully rounded with a hunting knife. A piece of iron is attached to cover the top to protect it from the weather and another longer and heavier strip of iron put around the bottom and up both sides. Caskets were built with the finest lumber obtainable and built to exact measurements.
Out of 1,764 posters statewide for the Indiana Poison Center contest, two first-place winners were from Lincoln Elementary School: Meenakshi Datta, fifth; Jennie Zellers, first.

Karen Sue Detwiler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank M. Detwiler, Warsaw, was among several Indiana freshmen students receiving their caps during a ceremony held at Thorne Hall, Northwestern University, Chicago. The girls are enrolled in the James Ward Thorne School of Nursing of Passavant Memorial Hospital.
Camp Fire Girls are celebrating their 54th anniversary March 16-20. A display will be put in the window at 107 N. Huntington St. (Pickwick block in downtown Syracuse. Mindy Rogers, Patricia Conn, Susan Wilson and Debbie Stahley put the finishing touches on the display.

Warsaw and Plymouth High School bands will be combined tonight and sit in the Warsaw cheering section at the armory pep session preceding the basketball game between the Tigers and Plymouth’s Pilgrims.
Dick Hudson, a high school student, is preparing to draw local cartoons for The Times.
John Baughn is remodeling the old W.A. Winebrenner brick residence at the corner of West Main and Maple Avenue he recently purchased. The family has been residing in Homer Smith’s uptown apartment adjacent to the Hotel Hays until the home is completed.
