Judy Kinsey, Leesburg Elementary School fourth-grade teacher, was named "Conservation Teacher of the Year" by the Kosciusko County Soil and Water Conservation District. Last week the Indiana Small Rural Schools Association named her the "Rural Teacher of the Year." The Farm Bureau gave her a $1,000 check. The school will honor her March 29.

     The National Weather Service forecast office in northern Indiana outside North Webster was selected as a 2003 recipient of the U.S. Department of Commerce Gold Medal organizational award for tornado warnings issued Nov. 10, 2002. The staff took actions to provide early and accurate warnings of a devastating tornado well before it touched down in Van Wert County, Ohio.

The sixth-grade students at Jefferson Elementary School have been making circuit boards for a science project to be shown at the Kosciusko County 4-H Fair. Karen Lowry, county youth extension agent, assists the students. Jill Basden is their science teacher.

     The children of the Greater Warsaw Cooperative Preschool completed the "Bunny Hop for Muscular Dystrophy." Erica Chinworth and Cameron Basden, 4, display their hopping skills.

     Last week the Tigerette Winter Guard received first place at the Indiana High School Color Guard Association's contest at Pike High School in Indianapolis and third place at Connersville. They will perform in preliminary competition March 18 at Mooresville High School, Indianapolis, and at Southport that evening for the state finals if in the top seven.

A boys' quartet composed of David Martin, Ray Bledsoe, David Barnett and Paul Benson will be one of the featured ensembles at the Lenten services presented by the Methodist Church in Warsaw this Sunday, March 8. The Warsaw High School choir and  Belles will present the program which features an Easter cantata entitled "He Lives."

     The Biddinger and Dye Music Center, Inc., has opened a store in Rochester. The firm is operated by William "Trib" Biddinger, and Herbert Dye, Warsaw, with stores in Warsaw and Peru.

     Milo Troyer, Cromwell High School science instructor, and Principal Ralph Bailey check over the 130 exhibits at the school's Science Fair Wednesday, everything from explaining the atom to soil samples.

75 years ago

Johnny Bryan, Jr., is in Warsaw visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Bryan, Sr., 441 South Detroit Street. Johnny was a Times newsboy from 1928 to 1932 and came to visit the shop and renew acquaintances with the boys. He left Warsaw in 1933, went to Cheyenne, Wyo. to be a cowboy, returned to Chicago two years ago where he was married and now drives a taxicab. Johnny says he is now 23.

     Two Warsaw youths, Encel Dodge and John Tuckey, and Robert Ellison, Winona Lake, will serve as page boys at the state legislature at Indianapolis the week of Feb. 13. Mrs. Will Hunter of Winona Lake telephoned The Times that she saw a pair of robins Thursday. Former Warsawan Paul Leiter is happily situated as a pharmacist at Bus-Jahn's Drug Store in Logansport. "Stop in to see me when in Logansport."
