The Washington Elementary/Edgewood Middle School Odyssey of the Mind team won first place in Division II at the regional competition at Bunker Hill. They will compete in the state meet in Brownburg. They are Adam VanDuyne, Mike Block, Katie Vanderpool, Erin Elliot and Elizabeth Kline. Their coach is Ann VanDuyne.
The Warsaw Chapter of the Office Education Association competed in the state contest in Indianapolis. Placing in the top six at the state contest were Teresa Rowe, first place, advanced typing; Lori Luckenbill, first place, advanced accounting; Tina Pfeiffer, second place, beginning typing; and Julie Frisinger, sixth place, bulletin board. The students who finished in the top three places will represent WCHS and District II at the national contest in Chicago.
Times-Union calendar girl for April is Carol Emmons. Carol, 16, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chauncey Emmons, Warsaw. She is a member of the Warsaw High School band, sings in the church choir and belongs to the 4-H Club, Junior Leaders and Future Homemakers of American. Carol, a sophomore, says as a hobby she likes sports of all kinds.
With beer a legal drink on Friday, April 7, a number of Warsaw merchants are making displays of beer mugs and playing cards in their show windows. One enterprising store on East Center Street has seven beer mugs and three decks of cards with the inscription: "The first card in the new deal." Reference evidently being made to President F.D. Roosevelt's campaign in which he promised the country a "new deal."
