Mrs. Hazel Thorn Nettleton recalls a story by her grandparents who told of the marsh and muck land in the east section of Warsaw from the Big Four Railway east on Center Street, that one time a man with a wagon and team of mules carrying equipment to build the Pennsylvania Railroad sank in a sinkhole near the property now known as the Charles Grabner home on East Center Street and was never found. The shores of Center Lake then came up to near the now present site of the Courthouse. The now Methodist Church building was then the border of a thick virgin forest and Indians would come up to the forest's edge and trade white settlers beads for food and supplies. Ludlow Nye, one of the brothers, was the surveyor of the creek that runs back through Winona Lake's Boys City. Settlers named it Ludlow's Creek.
