In a proclamation read in the lecture room at Warsaw Community High School Monday, Mayor Ernie Wiggins declared March 1, 2005, a special day of recognition for the Tiger swimming and diving team, which had the best season in the program’s history. The Tigers won the sectional championship by a mere seven points over Wawasee, ending the Warriors’ four-year hold on the title. At the state finals in Indianapolis, the Tigers finished eighth as a team with 116 points, the best team finish in school history.

Retired teacher Mary Reece of Claypool was among a group of educators from around the state who visited the State House and offices of the Indiana Department of Education Feb. 7. In addition to touring the facilities, Reece was honored as a “Distinguished Hoosier Educator” by State Rep. David A. Wolkins, Winona Lake.
Coaches honored at Warsaw Community High School in a joint effort between Franklin Life and Scholastic Magazine were Dave Baumgartner, wrestling; Chuck DeFord, cross country; Jim Dermody, baseball; retired golf coach Joe Harris.
Meenakshi “Meena” Datta became champion of the 1990 Kosciusko County Spelling Bee Feb. 21 by spelling “deprecatory” correctly in the 26th round. Debra Dome, runner-up, misspelled “deductibility” in the 24th round. She participates in regional finals at North Side High School, Fort Wayne, April 7 and the national contest in Washington, D.C. this summer.

A former Warsaw resident, Fred T. Stephens, now with a brokerage firm in Zionsville, plans to join the staff at First National Bank of Warsaw Feb. 15, it was announced by William Hadley, president.
Alfran Nursing Home was started in 1944 with three patients. The McDonald Hospital building, 2501 E. Center St., was purchased in 1957, and today the facility is licensed for 77 beds. The home is headed by Frank and Alice Wilson of Oswego, with their two adult children, Mrs. James Teghtmeyer and Elson and his wife, the former Mary Ellen Bryan of Mentone.
When Dave Barnett, organist for the junior class of Warsaw High School’s production of “The Peace Corps Girls,” became ill, Mamie Braddock, English, filled in.

Bill Connell, 75, former Daily Times employee, fractured his hip Friday in a fall on the ice near the Breading Cigar Store. He is resting comfortably at Murphy Hospital.
When two women were knocked to the ground when hit by youngsters riding bicycles on the uptown sidewalks, Chief of Police Raymond Neff issued a warning against riding their vehicles on sidewalks in Warsaw’s business district.
Daily Times carrier, George Hauth, 15, son of fire truck driver Roy, takes over Mayor John Hansman’s duties for one day Tuesday as part of Boy Scout Week.  Hauth suffered a broken collarbone, cuts and bruises last week when he was struck by a car as he bicycled home in the evening from his Winona Lake paper route.
