10 Years Ago April Lower, a culinary arts apprentice and graduate of Triton High School, Bourbon, recently was named the recipient of two national honors for junior members of the American Culinary Federation. Lower, a student in the ACF/South Bend Culinary Arts Apprenticeship Program, was selected by the ACF national office as one of two junior members to represent North America at the World Congress of the World Association of Cooks Societies in Kyoto, Japan, March 24-28.
25 Years Ago Better than 40 youngsters make up the Kosciusko Community YMCA Swim Team, which finished sixth in the recent state YMCA meet at Ossian. Members of the team range from being under 8 years of age up into high school. Among the team's swim coaches is Warsaw Community High School coach Steve Franklin and YMCA coordinator Pat Berkey.
50 Years Ago Robert Stender, of Warsaw, received a trophy as winner of the Indiana Toastmaster's Club Area One semi-final speech contest recently at the Westminster Hotel, Winona Lake. Contestants were from Toastmaster clubs at Huntington, Columbia City and Wabash, in addition to Stender, who represented the Warsaw club. Stender, chief accountant at Dalton Foundries, spoke on "My Brand of Management." He will advance to the area final contest March 18 at Huntington.
75 Years Ago Complaints were made recently by parents of children attending the Milford High and grade school, that pupils of tender years were playing slot machines at the George W. Felkner filling station located near the school house. Sheriff Virgil Yeager went immediately to Milford and raided the place, seizing two machines. One was a nickel pin machine in which a baseball game was played and the other was a penny slot machine. The machines are now in the custody of the sheriff at the jail.
