10 Years Ago Derek Baker, son of Kenneth and Sherry Baker, Warsaw, and sixth-grade student at Leesburg Elementary School, served as a page for Sen. Gary Dillon, Pierceton, Feb. 17. Britany Skibowski, daughter of Mark and Teri Skibowski, Warsaw, and Kaity Smith, daughter of Billy and Chrissy Smith, Warsaw, served as pages for Sen. Dillon Feb. 14. Both girls are sixth-grade students at Eisenhower Elementary. Everett “Buss” Tom was named the 2004 Outstanding Cattleman by the Indiana Beef Cattle Association at their convention in Indianapolis. He and his wife, Marie, began farming together on his grandfather’s farm 50 years ago. Gov. Mitch Daniels named Biomet’s Dane Miller and Tom Farms’ Kip Tom to the board of directors of the newly formed Indiana Economic Development Corporation. 25 Years Ago Tressa Felke, Warsaw, won three first-place trophies in tap, Broadway and jazz dances and a second-place ribbon in ballet at the Regency Talent Competition, Indianapolis Feb. 18, earning an opportunity to compete in the national finals the week of July 29 in St. Louis, Mo. Ron Bartanen, pastor of Warsaw Church of Christ since August 1988, has his paintings on display at the Bowen Center lobby. He has been painting for more than 25 years and specializes in landscapes in oil and watercolor. His works have been displayed in cities and galleries in four states, one winning Best of Show at the Lakeland Art Association in Dec. 50 Years Ago The Warsaw Printing Co. started in a small building located near the present Times building around the turn of the century. The late Vincent Gove purchased the plant from John Hammond in 1920 and began consolidating various job plants around Warsaw, purchasing the printing plant of the Warsaw Union newspaper, corner of Market and Lake streets. The Printing Co. occupied the west half of the Union building, expanding here when Reub Williams of the Warsaw Daily Times purchased The Union in 1939, moving to the present Times-Union location in early 1940. Ethel Gove sold the Warsaw Printing Co. in 1952 to Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lamoree, the present owners. He had been publisher of the Silver Lake Record since 1935. 75 Years Ago Burket residents and high school pupils are bursting with pride as their newly organized 24-piece band dons new uniforms, in purple and gold school colors, received the forepart of the week. Musicians turned out enmasse several weeks ago to raise money for the band fund. Delta Dean Doran, Burket, daughter of Virgil Doran, took over the music department of the school this year, and starting with but a handful of musicians, has enlarged the band to its present enrollment. Nick Mallers, manager of the Centennial Theatre, says patrons were loud in their praise of the new projectors, which show sharper pictures, reduce eye strain and reduce fire danger to nothing when the film breaks.
