10 Years Ago Dennis Darr was honored as County Cattleman of the Year at the Kosciusko County Cattleman’s Association meeting Feb. 1. He and his wife, Leslie, and daughters, Katie and Kelly, operate Darr Farms near Syracuse. Dan Ring, Claypool, received the Lifetime Achievement Award. He and his wife, Marian, own Maple Shade Farms. Youth awards went to Tory Keim, Kelly Smoker, Jane Leeper and Jackie Amiss; Beef Supporter awards, Waneta Bishop, Leesburg, and Karen Nelson, Burket. Dr. Gervas and Ann Schafer Black of Walnut Farms were the winners of a cut-glass plate at the auction. Kirk Robinson, Akron and 1977 Tippecanoe Valley High School graduate, has been chosen by the IHSAA to officiate the girls’ basketball finals March 5. He has been officiating for 20 years, and this will be his second trip. 25 Years Ago Debra Dome, 7th grade, South Whitley Middle School, sparred for 33 rounds against Sam Shetty, 8th grade, Warsaw Middle School, to win the second round of the 1990 Kosciusko County Spelling Bee Feb. 20. Debra, daughter of John and Shirley Dome, Claypool, took the 6th and 7th grade title for the second consecutive year, but lost the 1989 county championship to her sister, Janet. Sam was 1987’s county spelling champ. Max Fulwider, Warsaw Community High School Band, has been selected to participate in the 1990 annual Indiana All State High School Band sponsored by the Indiana Bandmasters Association March 9-11 at Butler University in Indianapolis. 50 Years Ago Warsaw Belles are Vicky Harris, Cathy Forbes, Rosalind Johnston, Jackie Benner, Sue Sechrist, Ivy White, Joyce Crum, Linda Snyder, Wendy Watts, Janet Beck, Connie Sherrick, Beth Swain, Elaine Rule, Jimma Christian, Carol Zitterbart, JoEllen Stinger, Colleen Martin, Janet Templeton, Lana Garber, Nancy Ganshorn and Carolyn Horton. Property owned by Richard Baker, Winona Lake, will be purchased by the Pierceton Presbyterian Church. The house on First Street will be torn down and either a new parsonage or an annex for Sunday School classes constructed. The house was built more than 100 years ago for the Conet family who manufactured fine furniture in Pierceton. 75 Years Ago In noting the death of former Senator Charles S. Deneen of Chicago last Tuesday, many Warsawans recall that he was a law partner of Roy Massena, a nephew of Cash Rovenstine, Atwood merchant. He was a former Warsaw young man, a brilliant student and a Daily Times carrier boy prior to 1900. Pierceton’s George Plew, school principal, reports that school attendance is exceptionally good despite the amount of sickness in Kosciusko County. The flu bug is apparently working overtime. The Rev. Rector, chairman of raising funds for Finland, is making plans to organize either a business men’s vs. school hack driver or business men’s vs. Sidney High School instructor basketball game.
