10 Years Ago Tippecanoe Valley High School senior Shane Denny will join former Valley player Trey Eaton at the University of St. Francis in Fort Wayne next year. While the Warsaw Tigers boys basketball team won’t be playing for the IHSAA state championship at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, conference rival Plymouth will face a school with Warsaw ties in the Class 3A title game. Gary Puckett, 1983 WCHS grad, who played football for the Tigers, is the principal at Washington High School, which is in the state finals for the first time since 1942. Wayne Bucher, 87, and his wife Irene, 84, Syracuse, have their picture on the cover of the March 14 edition of The News-Press, South Lee, Fla. They have been part-time residents of Indian Creek for 27 years. 25 Years Ago Lakeland Christian Academy hosted an auction at the Women’s Building at Kosciusko County Fairgrounds. A wide variety of new and used items were sold, including baseball cards, a station wagon, VCRs, Mary Kay and Shaklee products and handmade quilts. The senior class served lunch, and the junior class held a bake sale. Students participating included Troy Burns, Eric Bowling, Carol Hartwiger and Deonda Fritz. The Easter Wish Tree, sponsored by the Warsaw Wal-Mart Store, will be set up in the main lobby until April 1. The tree will have 100 eggs with names of area children inside. Combined Community Services ask that people pick an egg and purchase an Easter basket for the child, which will be delivered by the Easter Bunny at a party April 7. Helpers are Jill Jenkins, Sharon Woodling and Sue Barton. 50 Years Ago Graham Kreicker, Warsaw, was named “Outstanding Young Man of the Year” during a dinner at Horn’s Restaurant March 5 sponsored by the Warsaw Junior Chamber of Commerce. Ardel Hanna, last year’s winner, presented the plaque to the surprised winner. Robert DeCelles was chosen as the “Outstanding Jaycee and Jaycee Chairman.” Dr. Richard Carman introduced the guest speaker, City Councilman Ray Strayer Jr. Nine buses were used to transport the Tiger team, cheerleaders and other students to the Elkhart Regional. The caravan was given a police escort to North Side gym. Bedelia Weirick, sponsor, helped the cheerleaders decorate the Tiger bus. 75 Years Ago New Times-Union neon lights glowing from the corner Indiana and Market streets building are showering light on the sidewalk with full moon brilliance. Looking much like his father Merl, 19-year-old Emery Rowland was spotted driving his team and wagon through Warsaw streets to his home with all the composure of Washington crossing the Delaware. Emery last year rated a United Press dispatch throughout the country when he sent President Roosevelt a Claypool High School graduation announcement. The Warsaw Fire Department was called Saturday morning to extinguish an automobile fire at 802 E. Clark St. The car, a 1931 Ford Coupe, was owned by Everett Hite. Fire broke out when he started the car.
