Johnson Wax has awarded a $500 furniture shopping spree - a second prize in the company's "Tell Us Your Best Pledge Story" contest - to a North Webster woman, Tami Pavel. She won second prize by telling how, as a child, she and her grandmother had spent many hours together in an old rocking chair, now her most cherished heirloom.
Penny Warren received first place for her project during the Atwood Elementary School science fair. Penny, of the sixth grade, demonstrated "Water Purification." Russell Harman, principal, organized and directed the fair, which included 45 entries from children in grades one through six.
Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Mellencamp have returned to their home in this city after a visit at the former's old home town of Grass Lake, Mich. Grass Lake recently won national renown when women of the village at the last municipal election won every one of the town's elective offices. The new town board is "actually doing things that the men merely talked about doing for years."
The city attorney was instructed to draw an ordinance making the salary of C.B. Moon, chief of the fire department, $100 a year instead of $50, as heretofore. During his term of office as sheriff, Chief Moon under the state law was not allowed to accept remuneration from the city and for four years here served without salary.
