10 Years Ago Willa Henry was named recipient of the 2002 Bill Reneker Memorial Community Service Award at the annual community appreciation dinner recently. The event was held in the remodeled Senior Center, the first community gathering held there. Henry, a teacher for 41 years and a very active retiree now, was too touched by the presentation to say a word. 25 Years Ago If you found yourself getting up late for work today, don’t worry, you weren’t alone. Several Warsaw residents were without power for more than an hour and a half this morning when a transformer in Warsaw malfunctioned and caught on fire. Jim Manhart, district manager at NIPSCO, said the outage affected at least 2,324 customers on the west side of Warsaw and south toward Silver Lake. 50 Years Ago Mrs. Dale Shanbeck, Warsaw will spend next weekend at Indiana University, as guest of her daughter, Sandra, for the annual Mom’s Day festivities. Sandra is a freshman at the university. David Perkins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Perkins, Warsaw returns to his studies at Shimer College, Mount Carroll, Ill., after spending a week’s spring vacation with his parents. David is a sophomore at Shimer. 75 Years Ago Marie Emerick, 16-year-old sophomore at Warsaw Senior High School, was winner of the gold medal oratorical contest sponsored by the Winona Lake WCTU at the Warsaw Presbyterian church recently. Miss Emerick is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Emerick, of near Warsaw. Her prose selection chosen was “My Dream.” There were six contestants who competed.
